I think it was before WWII.
French movies the pride of Europe? I thought it was before the Franco-Prussian war?

...yes, that's exactly what I mean

When I try to think of pre-WWII European movies, pretty much only German ones come to mind.

Yes, the French were the primary innovators in cinema until about WWI.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I support the right of a country to shape its own culture, customs and life in general.

If they wish to do so by reducing exposure to Holywood, then let it be so.

This is not simply an issue of "let the market decide". We treat drugs and drinks as a special case in markets and one can argue that movies and music are an opiate too.

                      Only if you are crazy.

Drugs are a special case because they are illegal in most countries. UNESCO will have a good point when France bans Hollywood movies or American music, a step that I'm sure will make the French people ecstatic.

The French will make an exception for Jerry Lewis.
“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”

                            ROFL @ culture quotas.

You know how the Israeli music, film and other culture industries dealt with the huge storm of american culture products in the 80s and 90s, taking up revenues and stealing the hearts and minds of Israelis?

                            They got better

We've even opened our own music video channel (wierd thing with a total targetted audience of possibly 2 million people), which slowly comes closer and closer to international standards.

Siro, I think that Israel and other small countries see this differently than, say, France or Germany. The former are satisfied with watching american movies and listening to domestic music. The later are more ambitious. First they want to match USA in every field, genre and subgenre, then they want to overpower it

The French, Canadians, and various other insignifigant countries are intellectually banckrupt and incapable of getting better or even competing in the marketplace of ideas without rigging the game in their favor.
