Has anyone here ever been self-enployed as a consultant? I will be doing this for the next three months.. Never done it before.. I just need some advice on how to handle my finances - should I get a CPA's help or are the tax implications not a big deal.. I've seen some web businesses that will "hire" you as an employee for the duration of your contract. They will give you benefits and handle your taxes. The fee is like 4% of your billing rate. Anyone have an opinion on that type of service?

Sorry, I don't have any knowledge about what you seek.

What I am curious is what business are you in? I heard that consulting pays superbly, but I always wondered - what is it that an outside consultant can tell a company about it that its employees can't?

It depends on how much money you'll be making, and what your expenses are. If it's too complicated to explain, get an accountant.

Keep your receipts for travel, purchases, etc. Then have an accountant do your taxes.

Usually, an employee has a vested interest one way or another, while an outside consultant supposedly would do things in the interest of the company overall.

Of course, consultants are often brought in to voice an unstated position of the senior management, but that's another story.

Get a CPA. If you're making decent money they will help you save more than there fees will be. I wouldn't want to figure out all the Social Security and insurance stuff. Let them do it.

Funny, I got the impression that they told people what they already know, or very little that is new, but nicely wrap it up in an animated powerpoint presentation

I'm a software developer. I was hired to be a consultant for 3 months and then become a full-time employee. My future employer is a company that provides outsourcing solutions by the name of Perot Systems.. Actually, I'd rather not be a consultant at all, but my recruiter and Perot Systems worked a deal that allowed the recruiter to be compensated for finding me by billing my services to Perot Systems for 3 months as a consultant...

Get an accountant now. My wife was an independent contractor, and the tax bite, combining our state, federal, local, and social security taxes was 52%. It was the only time I've purchased fairly current tech, because I was essentially only paying half price (it was deductable). We upgraded from a Athalon 500 to an Athalon XP 2800, and from a Matrox G400 to an Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti4200 - a quantum leap so to speak. Talk to an accountant yesterday, find out what you can deduct, and make the appropriate purchases. Make absolutely certain you make your quaterly tax payments - and enjoy your new postion.

I spoke to an accountant. There are very general guidelines to what can be deducted. What else were you able to deduct besides tech equipment?
