Clearly Bush felt inadaquete by nominating someone smarter than him in Roberts, so this is just a little pick me up for him. He gets an added benefit of creating another public figure who is seen as even dumber than he is and thus can absorb some of the mockery he usually receives.

                  Its a brilliant political move.

                        I'd missed this gem:

"I think it's important to bring somebody from outside the system, the judicial system, somebody that hasn't been on the bench and, therefore, there's not a lot of opinions for people to look at." —On the nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court, Washington, D.C., October 4, 2005

"I have as much authority as the pope. I just don't have as many people who believe it." — George Carlin

It is kind of funny to see the far right trash about in their hate of her. I read today's NYT and I would very much like to find out if Rove promised she'd vote against Roe V. Wade but at the same time it's clear Bush intentionally avoided a fiery reactionary nominee in order to prevent a show down in the Senate. The centrist 14 would likely have sided against a dire hard reactionary meaning such a nominee would have lost while much of the current Congressional term would be eatten up by the political mud slinging. Bush knows he can't get his adgenda through on an election year so he's only got this year to make things work.

If the Senate has a Supreme Court Nominee fight taking up all of its time then Bush can kiss his adgenda good bye. I imagine that's why he's gone for a stealth candidate.

I'm sure he has a crony who'd recommend something unconnected & useless like amputating a toe and who'd then try to blame the nurse for the "cure" not working.
