Why not just tie the two planets together so people can just walk from one to the other?

Mars would have to be in geostationary orbit around the earth for such a space elevator to work wouldn't it? That seems unworkable to say the least.

        The answer is - NOWHERE.

At least when America put a flag on the moon, we took the time to take some rocks back with us.
You mean some rocks from the Colorado desert?

No, I mean literally tying the planets together so that they are in contact witheach, not tethered.

Mars-2 had to fall anyway. Why not to put some fancy emblem inside?

If the two planets surfaces were in contact the resulting traumatic massive deformation of both bodies into one mangled roughly spherical body would seem to be a very good incentive to avoid such contact in the first place.

I think that a very important question is economics of it all.

If space colonies will become fully self-sustainable, or sustainable through space trade then it's alright. however, this current model of "burning cash" on doing the same stuff we've done before, is unacceptable. We need to:

-Find Economic uses for the stuff that we find there here, so that it would make good old capitalist sense.

                  or

-Devise a plan in which a society which lives there sustains itself fully, and can grow on it's own.

                  Otherwise, it IS wasting time.

Nothing that exists could withstand the tidal strain unless the two bodies were tidally locked in orbit which is completely implausible for an object of mars's size unless we allow for a considerable adjustment to earths rotation rate as well as that of mars.

Viewed on these sorts of scales under these sorts of strains concrete, steel, hell even diamonds will seem to behave like very runny jello.

Then just use a gravitational displacer.

Such a planetary contact would mean the end of all life on Eart. It is belived by scientists that a roughly Mars size object impacted the earth a few tousand milion years ago. This impact esentialy destroyed the Earth. Out of the remains were eventualy formed the Moon and "Earth 2"(life if it existed before the impact had to re-evolve all over again). So unless you find a way to manipulate gravity and "reduce" the mass of Mars by a few tousand trilion tons that simpistic notion would never become a reality. And further more isn't it simpler to bring a man to Mars then Mars to man.

We could hollow Mars out as well.

And on the issue of cost.I have heard that even a mission to mars would be far cheaper than a war in Iraq (if they only found oil on Mars then this discussion would have been over in no time, and the Republicans could save them selves from further global embaresment ). And yes the Apollo program is about the only truly great thing I can remember about the US in recent years.

Well holowing Mars out isn't such a bad idea. Just put an artifical micro-sun in and you've got yourself a Dyson Sphere. It's a great public works project for the 89th century but ain't gonna hapen any time in the 21st century.

But if you want to disscus it seriously, what would you do with the trillions of tons of worthless rock (even if there were any usefull metals in the core, such quantities would flood the market making them worthless and would never be able to cover the expenses).
