You're right, that's the reason for the contest, 100%, because of the unmanned vehicles mandate, but I am thinking about the civilian technology spinoff.

The Internet, for example, had the original purpose of being a network that could withstand a nuclear holocost, but now it's mostly known for what we civilians use it for.

The interstate freeway systems were pushed by Eisenhower as a way to move large amounts of troops and equipment quickly, after he witnessed Hitler's Autobahn system.

Now they are known for sitting in traffic for an hour trying to get to work on time.

Less than 5 miles to go and Stanford's lead has been reduced to 3 miles.

It's down to the wire, folks!
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Did they finish? The program didn't paint them blue yet, but they should be finished...

Red Team Too finishes! Only 5 minutes behind Stanford. Probably second place.

What's the deal? Red Team finished two minutes ahead of Stanford? That doesn't seem quite right. They kept adding time to Stanford and adding time.

Looks like a bug in DARPA's web site. Carry on.

You know, Stanford and Red Team Too do not quite have that ring to it as do Ferrari or McLaren.

Yes, but McLaren and Ferrari didn't have the cajones to finish this challenge, I'm afraid to say.

The Terramax and Gray Insurance teams still have a chance to finish within the 12 hour window. Gray Insurance is located in Metairie, Louisiana (i.e., the flooded suburb of New Orleans), so it would be especially sweet for them to finish.
