Lord knows those float up each year and usually someone breaks it down the results down by red or blue. The blue tend towards the top and the red tend towards the middle or bottom. We've seen such threads here at poly.
Show me one of those posts where the results are broken down by red or blue. Thanks.

Don´t you have common standards in US-School System?

Here in Germany the schools AFAIK have certain freedoms. The Education ministry of our county (NRW) tells the schools, the minimum which has to be taught in every class (and for every subject) but schools are free to teach them everything they like above these minimum standards.
Oh and of course, more important, the questions for written final exams aren´t prepared by the schools themselves, but by the education ministry, ensuring that for every school type the performance of all pupils within their final exam throughout the country for every subject can be compared to each other (as every school of a certain type (Haupt-/Realschule/Gymnasium) get the same set of questions (they are brought to school in a sealed envelopes and each pupil can choose between two of them [both containing a different set of questions] for their final exam).

This way, all pupils which accomplish their final exams are ensured to have a certain standard and the education ministry is able to see which schools seem to have problems (with many pupils of these schools failing to meet the standards) and to send teams to investigate the reasons.

        No. Of course not.

There is one common standardized test which every student must take though. Unfortunately, the standards vary from state to state and even from school district to school district with in the state.

Our worst schools are where Republicans ain't -- our inner cities. They spend a fortune in these inner city school districts. Coincidence? Nope.

Don't try to foist Democratic Party abject failures on the successful GOP.
DanS must be wearing a Smackdown Magnet vest or something...

Our worst schools are in rural areas - especially poor rural areas. Inner city students would (intellectually) stomp most of the <750 student school districts in AR.

I'm just interested in one of those red/blue maps on education outcomes. I don't recall ever having seen one here on Poly, so I challenged Oerdin to backup the "usually someone breaks down the information" part of his post.

Hell since meaningful discusion in long dead in this thread, let's fuel the fire and suggest that it isn't the GOP but the teacher's union that is the stumbling block to improving education: A Union by Any Other Name

Well, okay. Poor rural areas are pretty much an even split between Dems and Republicans in my experience, so, I agree, I wouldn't call the dividing factor on good or bad scores to be politics.

Patroklos , the real factor is wealth. The more money a school spends (on academics), the better the student performs. End of story.

It died when Oerdin started typing random diatribes against Republicans.

The standardized test vary from state to state. Its now nationwide policy, thanks to Bush, that there should be such standardized tests.

And quite frankly, here at the Of the Mark family, we hold that as one of Dubyas worst policies. Too much teaching to the test, too many rote facts, too little child focused learning and creativity. We'd be happier if the US dept of Educ had less sway over Virginia, and if Virginia had less sway over the curricula here in Fairfax County.

And yes, we recognize that these tests help with accountability in poor and failing school districts. But for gifted kids, its sucks. Last year, after finishing Algebra, POTM had to go back and spend a week reviewing pre-Algebra which she had taken a year before - why? because the statewide tests ALL seventh graders take is on pre-algebra. And yet theres no time for field trips, and massive amounts of homework are given to complete the curriculum.

                          QFT.

Standardized tests just encourage teachers to teach to the lowest common denominator over and over again to make sure they get enough dumb jocks to pass the tests, while smart people like me were bored to tears. Lazy teachers using busywork to keep kids quiet is another shame [my great dislike of math probably comes from my witch of a 3rd grade teacher giving an excesive amounts of math problems (I'm talking 200-300 problems A DAY)].

I went to school in a rich suburban school district.

This is not an issue that is necessarily about clear cut partisan politics. Yes, on the federal level, Republicans are generally morons about how to handle education. Their entire ideological approach to education is flawed, misguided, and based upon completely falsehoods.

I trust Democrats to come up with a better solution, although to be honest, I don't quite know what the Democrats plan for education would be. However, the Democrats (as a party) show a propensity for pragmatism and common sense.

Before trusting any politicians to come up with any sort of plans (that will probably be loaded with pork), we should take a look at reforming our education system. I think things need to be standardized and controlled at the federal level. The quality of schools should be the same for kids no matter where you live, suburbs, city, or rural areas. And there should be federal standards for the curriculum. None of this local bull**** where local school boards can be controlled by religious fundies so that "intelligent design" can be taught in public schools or whatever.

We need to look at the problem, analyze it, and find a solution... and put politics aside.

                            But that probably won't happen.
To us, it is the BEAST.
