  • Question on violence in schools

    Background for the question:

Thursday afternoon a student was shot at Pine Bluff, AR High School. 3 non students came onto the campus, spotted the student outside the building, and a fight was started amongst the whole group. One of the non students pulled a gun and shot the student in the hip...he has already been treated and released, AFAIK. Police say they know who the suspects are but they can't locate any of them.

Everyone knows about three school violence events--Columbine, Jonesboro, and Flint (the city where the little kindergartener brought the gun to school and killed the girl...)

I think the media is starting to report these things less, because there's barely any articles on the Pine Bluff incident, and there was only a small (but lead) story on it on the TV news last night. Even only 10 years ago, if someone had been shot on a school campus even in Crime Bluff, it would have been humongo news.

Okay, on to the real question:

Has school violence gone up or down since the last few years, when it has gradually fallen out of the public consciousness? Is there a real decrease or do people just not get shocked by it any more?

I mean, I'm shocked when I hear a student was shot on a school campus, but that's just me...

If the media is reporting on it less, perhaps its becoming so common that it is not news anymore. Though, I'd be more worried when they start making articles when there aren't any school shootings.
