Yeah, I always hated Feb to April when I was scrounging coins to buy the next round.

But now, I think them were the good times.

Speaking of eating a cheap meal out, I think I'm going to go get some Wendy's

well, a good part of it is that I just don't (haven't) care(d) about money..

To echo everyone else, it's the food and booze that's killing you. I'd be especially careful about the booze. Drinking out is a black hole - the more you drink, the looser you become with the purse strings.

I was sort of a lost student for a while

a short time ago I joined a Nuclear Experimental group

and what they need is (a lot) of programs written

grad students are just suppose to be learning.. but I am still going fairly slow (not knowing Object Oreinted Programming/Linux)

I really should be spending every weekend and evening working.. trying to contribute

                        Mmmh.. Wendy's...

and reminds me of a time back in the 70s, driving down the 400 in a jeep with a girl named wendy and Bruce Springsteen comes on the radio ...

Wendy let me in I wanna be your friend
I want to guard your dreams and visions
Just wrap your legs 'round these velvet rims
and strap your hands across my engines
Together we could break this trap

We'll run till we drop, baby we'll never go back
Will you walk with me out on the wire
'Cause baby I'm just a scared and lonely rider
But I gotta find out how it feels
I want to know if love is wild
girl I want to know if love is real

yup, good times. No cares about money. No cares except today. Good times.

Well at over 40, I've known people who only lived for money, and they are filthy rich and boring, and people who were careful with their money, but still had a good time, and people who only live for today and still make good coin.

I've done the sh!t jobs just to make mucho cash, scraped by living pay check to pay cheque, and now I'm lucky enough to do something I really like making good coin, purely by chance, and still not saving enough.

In the end, and this is just a drunkard talking, do what you love cause things will work out if you have some brains and ambition, and doing what you love is worth a hell of a lot more than working for big bucks just for the sake of big money.

But then what do i know.

                              Why do you eat out?
Even if you can't cook, then just make easy stuff, or buy the nasty things in a packet. You'll save a fortune! Eating out is reserved for when you've got a worth hitting to impress, or if someone else is paying.
Also, why do you need to travel so often? If you're a grad student then I don't understand why you travel. That will save a lot.
Buy discount booze too, it'll taste rubbish, but have the same effect. The bible's premium contribution to world knowledge is that the Jewish weddings used up all the good wine first, when the guests still had some sense of taste, then shoved any old rubbish on after that. So maybe buy yourself a couple of bottles of premium beer, then any old toss to have after that.

Also, to cut down on the outrageous cell phone bills quoted in this thread, get yourself a land line and use it! I've got pay as you go on my mobile, and I barely spend £10 a month. It's mostly text messages - if I want to talk to my local friends I'll send a message telling them to meet me in the pub, but if I want to talk to anyone else, then I'll use my land line.

my parents didn't pay for college.. I doubt that they will start paying now

especially as my dad is dead.. and my mom's husband doesn't seem like the generous type (although, honestly, before my mom's remarriage she tended to be too generous with gifts, and my dad bought himself too much stuff (often)).
