So, my roommate is short on cash since financial aid around here comes several months after the school year starts. At the same time, she does not want to borrow money from the other people in the house or friends.

So after some discussion and planning, we have set up a busines where she makes dolls and T shirts that are subsequently sold by my student group as a dual-purpose fundraiser. To appeal to the half-hippie half-yuppie Berkeley student population, they're marketed as being 100% recycled with half the proceeds benefitting the education of local inner-city youth, both of which are true.

The center of our room now looks eerily reminiscent of scenes from my parents' generation in 1960s Taiwan. Is this the future of America?

I think it would be easier if she could run a tutor service. I used to do that when I was in uni, and pulled in USD20 - USD50 an hour.

From frosh physics to advanced CS to writing programs for (non-CS) theses. Simulations and such.

This option is also currently in the works, however, she's a humanities major and prospects are nowhere as good.
