You are missing one important item: one large, badazz knife. Something like a bowie knife, say. It is probably the most useful item you can pack.

As long as I have my social security number, and the phone number to my congressman I'll be fine, cause after all, the FEDERAL government has to take care of me, right?

        Filing cabinet
        Photos

Those are the most valuable items in your house.

My brother-in-law's great grandmother lost all of the family photos (going back generations) in Katrina. It was devastating to her.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

It depends on what kind of evacuation this is. Is this going to be a short hop to another civilised part of the world? Do I expect I have access to a car with ability to refill petrol on the way? Will I be able to return home soon even if it is completely flattened, i.e. am I looking at a natural disaster that will be gone in a few days as opposed to a long protracted war?

Bunnygrrl packed our bags before Katrina hit us. In it we have photos, clean underwear, marriage crap, some shirts. Also, I'd take the hard drives from the computers and the cats..

If I had to travel lightly (well with a backpack) it would be computer harddrive, laptop (probably, don't want to die of internet withdrawl), bandaids, painkillers, sleeping bag, two blankets (one small, one large, these are for unprepared people I feel sry for), pen and paper (if I remember), canned food (and a can opener, if I remember), 2-4L of bottled tap water, all my thermal underwears, a towel, a roll of duct tape, a coil of light rope, matches and if there's still room I'd add more clothes and any other food I can find.

I'd wear 2 jackets too, if it's cold anyway, the inner jackets pockets would be stuffed with stuff. I might actually carry the computer HDD in a pocket.

If evacuating by car I'd have my pack for if I need to abandon the car, and I'd also throw in the rest of my computer (not sure about the monitor), more blankets, 10L of water, more food, and clothes. However I'd keep the seats more or less clear in case carpooling is required.
