3-0 in tonight's game. Edmonton was shut out -- not by Kipper, but by the one, the only...Brent Krahn! He's not even listed as Kipper's official backup.
Goals by Tony Amonte, Eric Nystrom, and Daymond Langkow.
CALGARY (CP) - Considered a longshot in the battle for the Calgary Flames back-up goaltender job when training camp opened, Brent Krahn is making a serious play for the position.
In his third pre-season appearance ,and first at the Pengrowth Saddledome where he played junior hockey for four seasons, the 23-year-old made 22 saves for the shutout as Calgary won 3-0 over the Edmonton Oilers on Friday.
Tony Amonte, Daymond Langkow and Eric Nystrom were the goal scorers as Calgary improves to 2-1-0-1. The Oilers drop to 2-1-1-1.
Described by goaltending coach David Marcoux as "being on a mission", Krahn was blunt and to the point when asked what he felt would be the only acceptable outcome for this training camp.
"Making the Calgary Flames, that's the mission," said Krahn. "And not just making the Calgary Flames, but contributing."
Krahn is up against 25-year-old Philippe Sauve whom Calgary acquired from the Colorado Avalance in August. The assumption at that time was that Sauve would back up starter Miikka Kiprusoff.
Halfway through the pre-season, however, that role is clearly up for grabs.
"He didn't have much work but he made the saves he had to and that's a good sign for a young goaltender, to stay sharp and focused," said Calgary coach Darryl Sutter.
Krahn and Sauve each played 30 minutes in Calgary's first two games, but on Friday Sutter let Krahn finish his shutout bid.
"He didn't really have a lot of shots at the midway part so I just left him in there to see how we would handle that and he handled it really well," Sutter said.
"It was a nice surprise and I loved it, it was very exciting," said Krahn about getting to go the distance.
What is the biggest change in Krahn's game from training camp two years ago?
"Maturity," says Krahn, selected ninth overall by Calgary in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. "From two years until now, I've grown up a lot. I don't get so high and so low, I stay even. If I play well or if I play poorly, the big thing now is I believe in myself."
Although he didn't face a shot for the game's first 12 minutes, Krahn made a sharp save off Shawn Horcoff from in-close on his first chance and that seemed to set the tone.
In goal for Edmonton, Ty Conklin played the first period and was perfect on 10 shots faced before giving way to Devan Dubnyk, who played the final two periods. Dubnyk stopped 20 of 23 shots faced.
Ironically, the only goal to get by Krahn Friday was in the NHL's shootout that they're showcasing after all NHL games regardless of the final score. Rob Schremp beat Krahn on a deke on Edmonton's first shot and the Oilers won the shootout 1-0.
Notes: Calgary has 33 players remaining in camp (20 forwards, 9 defencemen, 4 goaltenders)... The crowd of 17,439 was Calgary's second consecutive sell-out... Among the Oiler scratches were RW Ales Hemsky, C Mike Peca, and captain D Jason Smith... Calgary's notable absentees were LW Chris Simon, RW Chuck Kobasew, and D Roman Hamrlik.
Man I missed seeing that.

Yeah, but all the goals were scored on a nobody goalie.
That doesn't matter if they have no offence, and Calgary had an equally nobody goalie...

We're getting close to picking our benches, and there's some players I can't believe haven't been taken yet. Here's hoping they're still available when it comes back to me....

Well. I do agree with the Nashville part, and can only hope for the second...
