Yeah that's what I think, less damage. Many of the punches and strikes that wouldn't have gotten in very good at all gets in with bigger gloves, and are heavier blows. With even bareknuckle, many of those punches just wouldn't rock you at all, sure they would do superficial damage, bruises and cuts, and it would look nastier, but when we are talking about damage to the brains per se, my gut feeling says bigger gloves are more risky.
And in boxing match, there's whole lots of punching. Say that the direct good hard hits would make less damage with bigger gloves, but bigger damage in lesser hits. I say most of hte times it amounts to more damage with bigger gloves at the end than the other way.
