The question in Germany is not: Who's going to win, but: Who can form a majority? Because obviously the winner is going to be the right wing CDU/CSU.

BUT, the CDU/CSU does not have any partners except for the liberal FDP and as latest opinion poll's show they're failing a majority by a tight margin... okay opinion polls... But, if they fail then there is the current SPD/Green coaliation, which I think will have no chance to gain a majority and to form a government they'd have to team up with the newly emerged Left party.
Schröder OTOH said he'll never reign with the left party and the left party's chief Lafontaine said he'll never go into government. Lots of trouble on that side as well.

The third option (that probably nobody wants) is a grand coalition between the CDU/CSU and the SPD. Which surely has enough votes, but they've got really a lot of work sorting out the differences and working on a coalition program.

However the outcome is, I guess only a right wing coalition would provide political stability. I don't believe Schröder is able to handle a coalition of the whole left spectrum. Especially the left party goes quite a radical course.

Btw, with the SPD losing I don't know if Schröder stays active. After all he called for elections because his party base did not have full trust in him anymore.

Anyway, the outcome will be pretty interesting.

It looks like the rather ugly looking chick will win. Still, it sounds like she'll finally get some real employment regulation liberalizations going so in the long run that will help the employment situation. In the short run it will mean lots of excess people will get laid off.

Schroeder as chancellor makes Carter look like an effective president. I don't know too much about Merkel, but I don't think she could be a worse chancellor than Schroeder has been.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

nice article. globalisation is the force which divided the german left. without schroeder the spd would never had any chance to govern in germany the recent decade (imho).

I think Schroeder was not that bad. Actually I am proud of his resistance with respect to the lies we heard from the Bush-administration.

                              the right wing cried opportunism.

but thats plain BS. we have still no troops in iraq.

and is his agenda 2010 opportunism???

he is convinced that it is the right step (and so am i). Sadly, Lafontaine and unionists live in a dreamworld.

nevertheless. I am surprised that the CDU has such a bad result today. at least it seems so at moment.

                                The results currently are:
                                SPD (Schröder): 33.2 - 33.7 %
                                CDU/CSU (Merkl): 35.7 - 36.6 %
                                FDP (Westerwelle): 10.3 - 10.5 %
                                Greens (Fischer): 8.1 - 8.3 %
                                Left Party (Lafontaine): ~8.1 %

These are probably to change still, I really doubt the CDU/CSU got so little votes.

As of now the situation is difficult, it seems the righter parties are unable to gather a majority, which will surely please Schröder as he's still in the race.

Part of why the CDU/CSU got that little votes is said to be their confusing fiscal policies (Merkl argumented with a Flat Tax of 25% that got heavily (and successfully) attacked by Schröder in the head-head). Some days before the election parts of the black party then turned round and suggested something different it was a chaos.
Another reason is said that the CDU/CSU is not caring enough for employees and that they are likely to open the gap between rich and poor.
I don't know however how that should explain the big success for the FDP.
