No, that would be The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath by H. P. Lovecraft.

On the tip of my tongue, that one....

Never read it, unfortunately. One of my first purchases from the Book Club in grammar school was a collection of Lovecraft's short stories, but I've never read that novel.

I like some of the films adapted from his short stories too.

      Your turn, Stuie...

Ok, hopefully this meets the "not too obscure" criteria (and I'll stick with the dream motif):

When George dreams, the world changes.

Written to pay bills, this proved a storming success, earning a 'princely' sum for the author, its title redolent of Afro-Caribbean music lyrics.

His other hits include a poem about the city where he lived and a long list....

                Don't have a clue.

                Stuie.

Molly - Dreamquest... it presages alot of his later works of horror. It makes a kick-butt FRP campaign, the cats are absolutely cool, and since I love Lord Dunsany, it's my favorite work of his. You absolutely must read it.

It's Samuel Johnson's 'The History of Rasselas,
Prince of Abissinia', written so that he could afford to pay for his mother's funeral.

It caught the exoticism wave in 18th Century Great Britain and made him a pile of dosh.

Molly - SF, 20th century fantasy, and most of military history I'll match up with anybody. I am not very well read outside of that, and science. After all, we are on a civ site!

                      Pah!

                      No excuses!

Remember what Professor Wiesenthal (?) says to Dustin Hoffman's history student in the 'Marathon Man' about Tennyson's 'Locksley Hall' and the study of history...

                      Okay- this one's easier.

Written by a would be dictator, this factual account (self-aggrandizing too) of wars he commanded in sounds like a stomach made of Indian cloth. He eventually saw the point of it all, but it took a river crossing...

Rats - and I had to translate that work for Latin II.
Latin I - learning all the rules and grammar of Latin.
Latin II - learning how an illiterate general broke them.
Latin III - learning how a poet and politician abused them.

Is it a wonder almost nobody takes the bloody language any more?
