  • Let the Good Times Roll: 1 Million More Americans in Poverty in 2004

In 2004, 37.0 million people were in poverty, up 1.1 million from 2003.

This is following the stellar year of 2003 when that happened and another million more had no health insurance. Which also followed 3 years of poverty growth.

The number of Americans in poverty rose by 1.3 million to 35.9 million, or one in eight people. The number of Americans without health insurance rose by 1.4 million to 45 million, or 15.6% of the population. Both sets of figures rose for the third-straight year.

People who are in poverty are there because of a choice they made to not work.

And plus Ted, poor people in America are much better off than poor people in the rest of the world. They have color TV's, microwaves, cable, cars, and are living ghetto fabulous.

Lack of material wealth != poverty.

Just saw an interesting claim that most if not all of that growth has been in non-hispanic whites. As in "we" are becoming "them".

Poor people are bad because they're poor or poor because they're bad; either that or God needs people to support Walmart and Pat Robertson's t.v. shows.

What happens when a person without health insurance has a traffic accident and needs expensive surgery to survive?

That would be covered by auto insurance-medical, which you have to have in order to drive (well, you need liability anyways. If you don't have insurance and the accident is your fault, and you only have liability, you're basically screwed).
