    • Since I'm eating lunch right now while I'm reading this, it's a good time to note that Asian food (Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese) makes me less sleepy in the afternoon that the traditional American lunch.

      • Japanese food is expensive here but quite reasonable in Vancouver.

        • My problem with Japanese food is that I don't like fish. But I can get a yummy Teppan box lunch with Australian beef for about $5.25 at a place around the corner from the embassy. Not cheap, but certainly reasonable.

          • I bought so much meat today. I got two sirlon steaks; they were on sale, buy 1, get 1 free. I got 16 pork chops, same deal, and two round roasts, again, same deal. I also got a Botson butt (pork shoulder) at $1.69 a pound.

Right now the butt is sitting in a plastic baggie, soaking up some liquid smoke. Tomorrow I'll put a rub on it and let it sit for a day, then toss it in the slow cooker for some pulled pork.

Eight of the pork chops are marinating in buttermilk. Tomorrow I'm gonna dredge them in flour and pan fry those suckers. Four of the others will get stuffed and broiled, and I think I'll just roast the other four.

The roasts will get rolled in herbs and garlic and roasted, eventually.

I made a marinade from scratch and stuck the sirlons in that. That was dinner. I spent about $50 on meat today. I saved $50 on meat today too.

              Isn't USD5.25 a truckload of $ in the Philippines?

It's a lot; for example, it's about half a day's wages for either our driver or our maid -- and we're told that we're overpaying them.

The thing is, there's not much of a middle class here, so prices in restaurants tend to jump from very cheap (generally for Filipino food, which I find inedible) straight to US prices (for restaurants catering to the Filipino elite and to expats).

really? its the other way for me - rice put me to sleep.

if i eat asian food for lunch, i often skip the rice part.

Interesting. Bread and potatoes do me in far more quickly than rice. Go figure.

Chicken adobo can be okay, but I've had better outside the Phils than in. And, honestly, I've never seen Crab Manila on a menu in Manila.

Filipino tastes run to the greasy and fatty, and use every part of the animal (pork here is often sold in packages with a sticker reading "skin still on!"as an enticement to buy). It's a peasant diet, I suppose, and not one that I've acquired a taste for.

This is 100% false. Heavy lifting combined with cardio is the BEST way to get your body into shape. Maybe you'll gain "weight", but you'll look leaner - which is all that matters.

Lifting weights don't burn fat, it burns sugar. You need a sustained period of aerobic exercise of at least 30 minutes to start burning fat. Lifting isn't going to give you that.

Some lifting is good because it builds muscles, which will help burning fat. However heavy lifting is just going to tire you out quickly.
