The now shook down league looks an incredible set of teams; many fully able for lord Stanley's glory. Particularly benefitting of a year's lockout seems to be the Canadian franchises - 4 of our 6 teams looking very strong for the upcoming season.
So who will it be, hoisting the cup mid 2006? Can Tampa Bay repeat their 2004 success in a now 2line pass system; one that would rather seem to curb their speedy advantage? Will the Calgary Flames bring it home "2 years later" - redefining the game with the grittiest looking power team since the 70's Flyers? Does the future of hockey rest in a young Sidney Crosby and a still struggling Pittsburgh franchise? What can the big E do for a deflated Toronto? Will Steve Y's fairwell tour amount to one last sip from a Red Wing familiar bowl? Can the big 6 Blackhawks claw their way back to attendence records that outshine local minor games?
It's my opinion that the Vancouver Canucks would have won last season's cup had Bertuzi still been in the ranks.. So I'd like to see them win their first cup, should the Flames not be in shape for their second. Otherwise.. go Canada! Canadians, support your teams and go to a game. Regardless of the circumstances of greed which so pissed us off last year, it's now more than ever time to slim this league back down to the roots and the respectable. The big 6 teams are assured survival in any case.. but as long as there's significant contrast of support between class outfits and sh***y, non sense expansion outfits (Nashville and Phoenix come to mind) - the league will re-shape to something really exciting.
Aside from which.. predictions for big points scorers? Anyone playing an office pool.. post here
