CNN says he changed his schedule and will be going into the city. But I agree, he won't be going anywhere too horrible...I'm just trying to figure out where 'not too horrible' is in that city right now.

I saw a CNN piece that the military is established at Louis Armstrong airport and will start ferrying people out of there. What suprised me is that the number of flights planned was only something like 19. Why can't that number be 100 or more? I bet there are dozens of jets that could be appropriated under emergency power . . .
Even a mere TWO hours flying time will get refugees to dozens and dozens of possible cities and each plane could do two roundtrips a day. heck -- even a measly one hour flight could bring people to any number of places. They might need to fuel up elsewhere for both legs of the flight
Why the heck aren't there some BIG 747s coming in (can the airport handle them?)-- and I'm thinking even airplane food would be welcome after what these folks have gone through

As of right now Something Awful is temporarily down due to Hurricane Katrina's abuse of New Orleans, where are servers are located. Our real site is either underwater or strapped to the roof of a stolen vehicle that is also underwater. The guys at the colocation center have a website here, but we have absolutely no idea when anything will be back online, and we can't get ahold of anybody there. Hell, according to this Wired Magazine article, SA is still online!
We will be coming back as soon as we are able to with all kinds of unfunny crap and forums full of anime poop references. For now we recommend you do something productive or consider helping out the thousands of people now living under the sea by donating some time or money or dry land.
In order to aid the relief effort, David Thorpe will be listening to Juvenile's hit "Nolia Clap" on repeat until New Orleans is rebuilt.
Thanks for your understanding!

He said that the police almost lost control of the last plant in the city that's producing drinking water last night. They had to transfer 100 officers from the convention center (where they still didn't have control anyway) to defend it. He says there's 1500 NO police and 250(!) National Guard troops trying to maintain order in the city, and there are 50,000+ people left to evacuate.
Not sure where the rest of the 2800 NG troops that were supposed to have been in the city last night are...

My question is why you would need to defend a water treatment plant-- If its producing water, wouldn't that water be GIVEN to any nearby people?
Also why aren't the military in there more quickly? Are there no rapid response units anymore?

It surprises me how thin the veneer of society is sometimes.
So true. The problem here is that the supply of drugs has been disrupted.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I dont buy that excuse. They knew this was coming since midday Sunday, or so. How long does it take to mobilize and send in the national guards? You dont need paratroopers for this. The airport in NOLA has been open for relief flights for at least 2 days. Yet if the Mayor is too be believed, there are STILL hardly any NGs there. I really dont understand that.

Isn't a significant proportion of the National Guard also in Iraq? Still it seems like the federal government dropped the ball on this and only realised the extent of the situation after the fact instead of having more anticipation. Also been reading about other towns and villages that have not seen any outside help yet. It just seems like a gigantic cluster****.
Finally! NG food convey is now on the way to the convention center. The general in charge was going from truck to truck telling people to keep their guns pointed at the ground because he "didn't want this to look like Iraq."
