Yeah, real classy. Engage in a spot of conspicuously frivolous consumption whilst the poorest languish suffering from thirst and starvation in a drowned city...

    • So.

When will Bush start recalling troops from Iraq to deal with the disaster...?

        Great, scarey article.

When did National Geographic print that?

edit: okay, apparently it was October 2004.

Are they still useable then, or do they have to rebuild many buildings?

And what about protecting the city in the future, this was certainly not the last hurrican. And even without them, I read that the city is constantly sinking and losing ground to the ocean and could be literally wiped off the map by the end of the century even without any more disasters. Wouldn't that mean they need some massive protection system, like the huge one which is built on the Dutch coast?
I'm not a construction expert but I'll make two points.

The wooden shacks that are underwater will probaly be bulldozed. Not because of mold but because of contamination and because most of them were 1 step above condemnation anyway. Anyone who lives in the south lives with a variety of forces including ants, termites, various molds, and hot humid summer weather that rapidly degrade wood. Its a fact of life here.

Most people are unaware of the damage done by hurricanes to large buildings (as I was until last year). They dont tend to fall down but the combination of high winds and the surge can cause high-rise building to become structurally unsound. In Alabama last year (hurricane Ivan) we lost a huge number of the large beachfront apartment buildings. All of the buildings still standing in the downtown district (including the superdome) will have to be evaluated and some (possibly more than just a few) will have to be wrecked. An even larger proportion of the buildings along the coast, that had surge damage in addition to the effect of the winds, will also be write-offs.

            • Look, 100,000 people - that is only 2,000 bus journeys!

Six days on and there's still tens of thousands of people waiting to leave - just how ****ing incompetent can you be!!?

How about a history lesson for all you neo-cons who still insist on defending this grossly incompetent admistration...

              Dunkirk 26 May - 4 June 1940, 65 YEARS AGO!!!

In ten days 338,226 people were rescued by a fleet of mostly small wooden sail boats across about 30 miles of hostile open water infested with U-Boats and constantly under attack by the Luftwaffe!!!

That is almost 34,000 per day

Or to put it another way - NEW ORLEANS WOULD BE EVACUATED TWICE OVER BY NOW!!!

WHY THE **** ARE THERE STILL PEOPLE WAITING TO BE EVACUATED 6 DAYS AFTER THE HURRICANE STRUCK!!???

Maybe we should send the Luftwaffe to speed up the process once again

I'll give you a hint, those 100s of buses ALREADY in New Orleans could have rescued these people BEFORE the hurricane hit!!! All this human suffering for such incompotence.

There very likely won't be anyone left to rescue by then. It will just be body recovery. That will be the end of a week with no water.
