    Norway:

Scandinavia basically pwns the argument made by Neo-Liberals and Libertarians about how awful the welfare state is. And also shows why Economics has become a farce, it has become a Neo-Liberal cult that predicts doom and gloom for any country that does not bend over backwards for business. What happened to the Keynesians?

          Dream on.

BJS Report Finds Murder Rate Unchanged
In the latest National Crime Victimization Survey, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reported that the U.S. murder rate for 2003 was about 5.6 per 100,000 persons, unchanged from 2001 and 2002. Of the victims of murder, approximately 49% were white and 49% were black. (DPIC note: While the report found that the race of victims is evenly split nationally, victims in death penalty cases are mostly white (about 81%)). In murder cases, 76% of the offenders were known to the victim, and 24% of offenders were strangers. Firearms were used in 71% of murders and homicides were mostly intraracial (victim and offender of same race). The most cited circumstance leading to murder was an argument (28%). Read the full report. (Bureau of Justice Statistics Criminal Victimization, 2003, (September 2004)). Even though the 2001-2003 murder rate remained steady, death sentences continued their five-year decline in 2003.
The Death Penalty Information Center (DPI) is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to serve the media, policymakers, and the general public…

Home is where the homicide is:

The UCR Program estimated that 16,503 murders occurred in the United States in 2003. This figure represents a 1.7-percent increase from the 2002 estimate.

Law enforcement agencies provided the UCR Program with supplementary data for 14,408 murders in 2003. These data showed that most murder victims (90.6 percent) were adults and most were males (77.6 percent). Of the male murder victims, 8.2 percent were juveniles (persons under the age of 18). Juvenile females comprised 13.5 percent of female murder victims nationwide.

By race, 48.7 percent of murder victims were white, 48.5 percent were black, and the remainder were of other races.

In 44.5 percent of murders, the relationship of the murder victim to the offender was unknown. Of the 55.5 percent of murders in which the victim/offender relationship was known, 77.6 percent of the victims knew their assailants.

In those murders for which law enforcement personnel reported victim and offender relationship data, 32.3 percent of females were killed by their husbands or boyfriends, and 2.5 percent of males were killed by their wives or girlfriends.

Of the murders involving a single victim and a single offender, 92.4 percent of black victims were killed by black offenders; 84.7 percent of white victims were killed by white offenders.

Of the murders in 2003 for which law enforcement identified the type of weapon, nearly 71 percent (70.9) involved firearms. Offenders used knives or cutting instruments in 13.4 percent of murders; personal weapons such as hands, fists, and feet in 7.0 percent of murders; and blunt objects in 4.8 percent of murders. Four percent of murders were committed with other types of weapons.

In 2003, law enforcement investigation was unable to determine the circumstance in 33.9 percent of murders in the Nation. The supplementary data also showed that more than 16 percent (16.4) of murders were committed during the commission of another felony such as during a robbery or a violation of a narcotic drug law.

In many polled countries, the US often holds the second position. But Canada is clearly the first.

You are lucky. I have been shot at once and have had a pistol pulled on me two times.

The time I was shot at was by a farmer with a shotgun. Luckily it was only a warning shot and it was from a about 100 yards away.

The other time it was by thugs.

I was boy, with my brother and a friend. We were walking up this dirt road to go play in this abandoned house. The road was thickly wooded with dense underbrush on both sides. When we were about a quarter of a mile from the house we saw two men come out. They yelled something at us, jumped in their car and raced towards us. We ran and hid in some bushes. The thugs knew about where were, but didn't see which side of the road we hid on. I saw a large pistol in one on the men's hands. Luckily they went to the other side of the road and we got the hell outta there. I never ran so fast in all of my life.

The third time was by a cop. That was freaking scary. It's a long story and I'm not going to bother with it now.

I have had my pet cat shot and killed by some random pr*ck too.

Do you have any idea what kind of countries make up the executive branch of that agency?

There have been this kind of rankings in the news' before. The problem with them is that they're all pretty subjective, since the creators of the list get to pick up what matters and what doesn't. UN bureaus tend to be professionals when it comes to knee-jerk anti-americanism.

                      Wrong.

Geneva does not house main body of the UN, that would be New York (the General Assembly, the Secretariat, and the Security Council). Geneva houses a plethora of other UN agencies like the ILO, WIPO, the WTO and well over another dozen which I am too lazy to remember. Countries assign an ambassador to Geneva which is called the "Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Other International Organizations" which is a different title from the "Permanent Representative to the United Nations" (the one in NYC).

I should know, my mother works there.

I think many Americans think the US is the best place to live because honestly, if you are rich, there is nowhere as good to live in as the US. Now, if you are poor, then you are out of luck, and if you are middle class, then things are OK, not the best. But all Americans fantasize about how they will be rich, and therefore, enjoy all the goodies America has to offer than top 5%.

Think you got it on the money there Gepap. If I was well off American I'd think it'd be the place to live, if I was an unemployed african american from inner city Detroit, I might not. The reason a lot of European countries (and i am guessing places like Japan, Australia and New Zealand) might be ranked ahead of you is that the disparity between rich and poor is not as big.

Personally, if i had to pick a country to emigrate to it'd be New Zealand.
