this has GOT TO BE one of the most rediculous laws of all time.

I can't believe we actually spent serious money on this campaign. *shakes head sadly*

Car makers MAKE the safety device and install them. From there, you are (or should be) on your own, because a) it IS an infringement on personal choice that the state make such rediculous mandates (so far, there's no law against bein' stupid, but this law clearly indicates that they're pushing hard for it), b) the ONLY reason it was given the time of day is because it's an easy, relatively painless way for the government to raise more money (tack on a hefty no seatbelt fine when you're stopped for something else, or give the cops yet another excuse to stop you...great...like we need more of those!).

Despite what some posters here have claimed, it's got nothing to do with saving lives (stats show that the new law isn't really prompting that many more people to buckle up, indicating that if this WERE the prime motivator behind the law, then it ain't working), and despite the great mental image it gives, there really aren't that many people killed each year by human projectiles, and certainly not a sufficient number to warrant its very own law.

It's about cash.

You've got it, the government wants it, and this is their latest meal ticket.

I resent it.

Yeah...I kinda figured that would be the response. These days, anybody who even marginally disagrees with the right wing government in power is categorically deemed to be a left wing extremist and conspiracy hound.

The stats, however, would seem to indicate that if it WERE about safety, then it's a) not at all efficient, and b) not working to any relevant degree, which leads one to look elsewhere for the root cause of the law.
