I just got a new laptop (Averatec 3250), and I'm having trouble getting it to work with my cable modem. I've tried it with both xp home and pro. When I connect it to the modem, I can see the pc activity light flash on the modem, but I get the "this connection has limited or no connectivity" message. My other computer is running xp pro with no special configuration changes, and has no connection problems. No routers involved. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, my modem doesn't have built in wireless, and nobody in my vicinity is running an unsecured network."Beauty is not in the face...Beauty is a light in the heart." - Kahlil Gibran

if i am correct your modem doesnt have to have built in wireless thats the laptops job. If you can search for unsecured networks the lap top should find the secured networks as well and one being ur modem I am assuing it is dslWhen you find yourself arguing with an idiot, you might want to rethink who the idiot really is.

power down modem, power up modem while connected to laptop, reboot laptop, likely you are all set
almost all cable modems will only release 1 ip at a time to a single mac address.
if you switch the modem to a new pc (and hence new mac address) it will not release a new ip, even though it will have an active connection
which is also why a router is very handy, the router becomes the 1 mac address, your other pc's can connect at will

kirnwaffen your laptop should pick up the modem un plugged, but i am glad u got the answers u needed. The need to be plugged in to the modem kinda defeats the purpose of it being a laptop at home. I would reseach the ability for ur laptop in finding the modem while searching for thenetworks. I didnt realize you are are on a mac My kid just got a mac i book and his picks up my modem just had to get the code on my modem put inthe machine rightWhen you find yourself arguing with an idiot, you might want to rethink who the idiot really is.

That's why it is good to have a switch/router box connected to your cable (or DSL) modem. You can connect whatever computer to it, and most of them have built-in wireless these days. Just remember to secure the network.(\__/) 07/07/1937 - Never forget
