  • Sweden considers banning Fred Phelps

I just saw this on the TV news. I have no link in English at the moment. The Swedish secret service is looking for legal ways to ban Fred Phelps from entering the country after his attacks on Sweden in general and the Swedish King in particular. One of the legal grounds for the ban may be "high treason", an extremely rare accusation, but lawyers are looking into it.

Reverend Ã…ke Green (the anti-gay preacher who was sentenced in the first court but aquitted in a high court) is very embarassed to be endorsed by Phelps, who wants to raise a monument over the "anti-gay hero". With friends like that who needs enemies?

Contrast this with how little the various Muslim clerics have to complain about in Sweden.

I think it is clear now which path Sweden must choose.

Yes! I hope Sweden still has laws on the books about threatening a reigning sovereign like we do!
      "Wait a minute..this isn''t FAUX dive, it's just a DIVE!"
"...Mangy dog staggering about, looking vainly for a place to die."

We have very unrestricted freedom of speech, but it doesn't include asking for the death of a named person or a group of persons. You can say any crap you want about the King, but you could get jail for asking for his death or something similar.

I think this is stupid given that Phelps likely has no particular desire to actually go to Sweden.

Also, treason? wtf? He's not Swedish!

The matter is raised because of Phelps plans a trip to Sweden to endorse anti-gay preacher Ã…ke Green. Phelps hates the Swedish King because the King did not resign after Ã…ke Green was sentenced for "agitation against minority groups".

Verbal threaths are illegal in any case. If you make them against the royal family, it's called high treason, which probably goes for foreigners as well.

What about talking in the public about "taking him out"?

Why don't they just not issue him a Visa? That should work. They can also declare him persona non grata.

Now, while I would LOVE to see both Phelps, and assorted muslim clerics clinging to a small piece of driftwood, hundreds of miles away from shore, we still have to respect their freedom of speech - but they have also got to respect our right of not wanting them in our countries.

                          Don't block him from entering.

Let him in and then lock him up for something so he's not here in the US.

                              Ha, you wish!

It's sweden, so even if they'll lock him up, it will be like for 3 days if he commits a murder.
