  • Just when you thought that Korean nationalism couldn't get any stupider

As you may know, there's been a very silly dispute over a dinky little island in the Sea of Japan called Dokdo/Takeshima over which the Koreans have become quite hysterical of late. There's been people setting themselves on fire, idiotic fundraising campaigns on behalf of groups "defending" the island from the Japanese etc. etc. But it's just gotten worse

I was at the movie theater today and they have the standard run of crappy ads in which you don't know what the hell its advertising until the last second and then suddenly a strange new ads comes on. There's some caricatures of buck-toothed Japanese on boats, a whole big fleet of them and they're moving to attack Dokdo and flying overhead are thousands of Zeros. But just when it seems that the perfidious Japanese will conquer the useless tiny chunk of rock a giant Korean robot appears from under the sea and yells about how Dokdo is Korean land and then it makes a big tidal wave and destroys the buck-toothed menace. WTF?!?!

I tried to find a clip on the internet but no luck so far, just a website saying that the Korean robot (Taekwon V or something) is a rip-off of some kind of Japanese robot. Typical

What could possibly be the point of making this ad and paying to have it shown in Korea? I must have cost thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars. Maybe it was this idiot who paid for it:

Local Man Places Dokdo Ad in NYTimes
    Thursday, July 28, 2005 10:53:55

South Korean man has posted an ad titled “Dokdo is Korean Territory” in the New York Times at his own expense.

Seo Gyeong-deok’s Dokdo ad in the July 27th issue of the daily notes, “Dokdo is two islets east of the Korean Peninsula. Dokdo Belongs to Korea. The Japanese government must face this fact.”

In the announcement, he gave his website address (www.koreandokdo.com) instead of his name to draw readers’ attention and to encourage them to look up more detailed information about the territorial dispute on the website.

In an online interview with Korea’s Yonhap news agency, Seo said he had saved up money to post the announcement because he thought publicizing the issue in a prestigious newspaper such as the Times would help promote Korea’s sovereignty over the islets.

The daily frequently carries opinion ads on political and social issues by opinion groups.

Seo says he will place similar ads in other prominent dailies such as the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and European dailies to raise awareness of the international community on the issue.

Compared to this, the US' trade issues with Canada look positively sane.

The Canadians are behind all of this somehow. They just can't leave other people's islands alone.

Krazy Koreans shouldn´t be allowed to expand, and should be confined in their small country
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

We should make one about the Danes invading Hans Island.

They'd be a bunch of fat, alcoholic porn freaks wearing horned helmets. Then a giant hockey player would skate across the ice and send the boatload of filthy Danes back to Daneland with a mighty slapshot.

Curious. Has Vietnam jumped on this nationalist frenzy as well?

So Korea actually has a presence on the islets? That's what I got from a google search anyway.

Since there are two why can't they split them?

They should be able to share them. Make into a Korean-Japanese cultural exchange or something.

Unihabited islands should be turned over to the U.N. for adminstration.
