    "It was..."

Hint: last song by the best act of Lowlands 2005
Within weeks they'll be re-opening the shipyards
And notifying the next of kin
    Once again...

I think you're going to have to be a bit more helpful than that Hueij
        Speaking of Erith:

Can't you guys just google it?

          Okay, first two lines:

It was back in '32 when times were hard
He had a Colt .45 and a deck of cards

Again: best act of Lowlands, as a matter of fact I'm listening to it right now.

Thank god the rest of the line wasn't:

            "... my first real 6-string".

We've been told lies, we've been herded around
taken for rides, told that this is the one
We've learnt all the steps, and where do they lead
right back to zero, or not far I believe

Making history as we open our eyes
noone's quite sure so we, we improvise
and whereever it leads us is whereever we'll go
I'd dance forever if they'd let me, you know
                Dancing in the Street?

It was back in '32 when times were hard
He had a Colt .45 and a deck of cards
                I'm a Cowboy... baby.
                Monkey!!!

Japher, no not Dancing in the Street, but it's the right decade. You have to go back a couple of years though.

                  Here's the 3rd verse:

Wearing our hair up in anger we cry
the revolution's dead it went out in style
the children are learning much faster than we
soon they'll be older, but then again so will we

                      Yes.

                      Brilliant song, really.

Last verse + lyrics at the end:

Time has come for each of us to decide
to follow blindly or to step out of line
the party is over, it has been for years
let's use the water to wash up, not for tears

                      It seems such a pity
it seemed we had the same dream
                      and thinking of things past
you sing first, I sing last...
you sing first, I sing last...
you sing first, I sing last.

Two then, but one is really obscure:

"They've got a German shepherd dog called Prince,
the one called Sheba died." No Googling!

                        Real:

"And you've just had some kind of mushroom"

Correct - how about the other one then?

I just tried to Google the first lyrics, and neither of the two hits were valid links. It'll give you the name of the band (well, Nigel and session musicians), but not the song.
