  • More from the Kelo Decision: they owe rent to the government now

Connecticut's place to go for things to do around Hartford and New Haven, including best restaurants, family events, live music, museums and more.

"Those who believe in the adage "when it rains, it pours" might take the tale of the plaintiffs in Kelo v. New London as a cue to buy two of every animal and a load of wood from Home Depot. The U.S. Supreme Court recently found that the city's original seizure of private property was constitutional under the principal of eminent domain, and now New London is claiming that the affected homeowners were living on city land for the duration of the lawsuit and owe back rent. It's a new definition of chutzpah: Confiscate land and charge back rent for the years the owners fought confiscation. "

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

I cant imagine what Justice Kennedy was thinking when he sided with those damn liberals on what is possibly the worst reversal of our constitutional rights. I think we have to consider demonic influence from Hyannisport.

What did New London want the land for anyway?

This sounds like it's getting ridiculous.

Reversal of wha? It's just asserting something which has been going on for decades (ie, Chavez Ravine, home of the Dodgers). The only difference is the minority didn't like that it was going on for only one private company. They would have been perfectly ok, if it was taken over for a privately owned strip mall.

This is pathetic. First Big Business uses the government to steal people's property, now they are using it to steal people's money?

It would have still been decided the same way if it was for a strip mall (with the same 4 dissenting) but this decision pushed the boundary of 'public use' to new extreme levels that most anyone can see.

I've disliked the abuse (IMHO) of eminent domain since I discovered that they could use it for commercial purposes, and have been opposed to that for over two decades. It's just this is utterly shameless, I hope as I believe it was Imran pointed out that this makes people pay more attention to their local elected officials. In fact this very issue was critical in the election of our County Judge-Advocate (essentially county mayor) in the last election - not eminent domain, but massive abuse of zoning to favor developers, a related but different issue.

It's different when it's for a highway or a base. But strip malls can find their own land.
