If the Americans continue with their attempt to destroy the UN, it will plunge us back into the alliances of the pre-WWI era as others group together to counterbalance the US. This is a depressing thought.

I think it is more likely now than at any point in the last 15 years.

The biggest shame is that it was Americans who most clearly saw the folly of the old system and took the lead in creating the UN to do something about it.

The quip on US education on the matter was what I hoped would be avoided. I should have known better.

War on terrorism could count, since so many countries have decided enough is enough, but isn't really in the vein of the same circumstances.

It was also said there will always be war.
It's been written in the world's best seller, that there will always be war and rumor of war.
That doesn't constitute a global war though.

            MY opinion:
Maybe somewhat surprising to a few pontificates, I'd say no.
BeBro hit on part of the reason I think not.
I don't think there would have been a II, had not Hitler's timing been so impeccable, and his methods so mad that they went unbelieved.
I also think that past experiences, the shrinking of the world through the media, and yes education, will serve to stave off such a condition.

One final opinion. Seems to me that while saying No could be considered avoidance of reality, saying Yes could be viewed as being prepared for it, so less might be done to avoid such a catastophe.

I'd like to hear more of your discussion.
The question is more than hypothetical.

**shrug** If World War III is to become a reality, it won't be for another 20 to 40 years at the earliest. That's about the earliest time when the growing alliance between China and parts of the Middle East and Africa reaches the point where it will be able to go toe-to-toe with the military of the U.S. and her allies.

Pessimistic? I imagine so, but such is the way of life with humanity. Perhaps the third one will be big enough and wipe enough of us out that the remnant of our species will never, ever again go to war against each other on such a large and destructive scale.

We need to save those energies for when we expand to the stars. Lord knows there are plenty of alien worlds out there that need to be brought under the rule of the Terran Empire.

As if the UN needs help with that. They're doing a fine job all by themselves.

The UN is only as good as its most powerful members. They bear the lion's share of the blame.

No, because war is too much a damper on economic activity to allow to happen. Unless a powerful nation finds itself under severe economic strain... well maybe then. But not for a long time.

The more important question is will there be a WWIV?
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

                              Maybe, if cockroaches makes wars.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
