The Bay Area already has a historic warship, an aircraft carrier in Alameda. The organization that runs it is in bankruptcy due to low visitor numbers, in part because of the ship's hard to get to location.

If I were on the San Francisco city council, I'd support getting the ship, and converting it into housing. Actually, that might not be such a bad idea for that aircraft carrier in Alameda...

They need the Iowa to blow them seals away so people can use the walkways near the Wharf.

A couple of Newfies with clubs would be cheaper.

Isn't that the story? It's not as much fun, but it's cheaper.

shore bombardment with the big guns is useless. They have a limited range.

They were outfitted with cruise missiles (which they did use in the first gulf war).

But it's innefficient to use that as a cruise missile platform when it has a crew of over 2000 people compared to cruisers with a crew of less than 1000 people.

Couldn't they sail it up the Mississippi to Davenport?

Side benefit would be major recapitalization of the locks, dredging etc. Full employment in the Missippi Valley for quite some time.

There was some talk a few years ago about redoing the super structure with aegis technology and removing the after turrent and installing a harrier hanger. Cost was the major drawback if I recall. Of course it would be nice to have a platform out there that could take a missle hit and keep on fighting...
