On the front cover of the SMH today there's an article about John Howard and the State Governments calling for a redefinition of Civil Liberties in the wake of the London bombings. There's talk of reproducing British anti-terror legislation here (i.e. national I.D. cards, restrictions on freedom of speech, detainment of terror suspects for three months without charge, racial targeting by security officers etc). On another page they're talking about how well off we'll be once the Government effectively strips workers of their rights to collectively organise and fairly negotiate terms with their employers. On another page they're talking about how the Education minister wants to rid school english syllabi of critical theory and non-canonical texts...
Is the whole world going in this direction? I was reading in the news a few weeks ago about how Conservatives are taking over Campuses across Australia, and how conservatism is now considered 'cool'. At uni the other day where the socialists usually have their stall I saw Christian evangelists. The next day there was another group of Christian evangelists.... and then another!!!
