Outside of the two main cities, Pennsylvania is the deep south. Then again, that's pretty much true of the whole country.

No. Just going to the Vet (Veteran's Stadium, when it was still standing) gives you an idea. The only stadium in the US with its own jail.

What's sad is that he originally got the seat by beating Harris Wofford, an old-school, Kennedy-era liberal of immense dignity, stature and integrity in what was an incredibly nasty campaign on the GOP's part. The movie Bob Roberts, which is about a Pennsylvania senatorial election in which a young Republican upstart with no scruples unseats a dignified liberal senator, weirdly prefigured that 1994 election (it was made in 1992).
