I think that young people entering politics do believe in certain ideas in an honest way. They might be naive, innocent and idealistic, but they are sincere.
Then you look at the other end of the spectrum... The top politicians... Corrupt, cynic, hungry for power, doing everything they can to conserve their positions...
True or false, I don't know... But suppose that's how it is... Do you think a person with honest, genuine intentions can reach the top untainted? Or do you have to play the ugly game, deceiving voters and giving in to lobbyists, backstabbing and burying your friends to go all the way?
In short, is there a single top politician in the world that has stayed true to his/her ideals? That has been and remained an honest person? Is it even possible, or is the trade such that only the manipulative power players make it?
