did you not see the second part which I added later (but is included in your quote).

This analogy doesn't work unless you include that there are movies on VHS that aren't available on DVD.

As I've said before, we'll soon see any game worth getting made available for console, especially with the advent of BlueTooth/wireless keyboards and mice.

wake me when civ3, smac, civ4, neverwinter nights are available for consoles. I'll gladly buy one. I have no real prejudice against them. I owned a sega genesis back in the early 90's before I owned a PC. I was in the navy, and a small console maked more sense than a hefty computer. But I found I didn't care for that many sega genesis games. The sports games were the only good ones, and they become boring after a while.

          You could install

          The Developer Tools + X11 + X11 SDK+ Fink + Fink Commander

          and try out XMMS.

          This will be updated soon

That $299 console will also not provide:
            Internet browsing access
            Cavernous storage space
Multitasking abilities while doing multimedia playback and gaming
Work-related items, such as programming, word processing
The actual use of a keyboard and mouse.

Sn00py, if you could find the name of that program, I'd greatly appreciate it.

              Ag:

I'm already familiar with XMMS. It is, after all, an OSS program that's used in Linux. If I were going to go that route, I'd've gone with Beep, anyway. I do have x11 installed, but I was hoping for a mac-native solution.

Automator World, on the other hand, looks promising. Lots of little applets I see...

And I think DoubleCommand is what I'm looking for to fix the stupid mac keyboard layout/behavior.

Depends...the PS3 HD is coming with Linux preinstalled on it.

When you become disappointed with CIV4's severely unbalanced gameplay and ridiculous bugs, will you be ready to purchase a console? Seriously though, after Firaxis' performance in the development and support of Civ3, how can you have any confidence that your Civ4 experience will be anything less than completely frustrating?

Hm... Cabrio seems to have a few bugs in it-- I don't think it likes Tiger.

Hope it'll be fixed by the time Liger comes out in 2006.

As far as consoles v. pcs... I've been, and will always be, a PC gamer at heart. All the games I generally play on the PC can't be converted over well. Strategy games, for instance, or MMORPGs and FPSs which require a keyboard and mouse for the best control--I just can't deal with how limiting game controllers are.

Until now, I've only used consoles for: Tetris; Squeenix games; Strategy RPGs, and other RPGs, non-multiplayer.

And for the forseeable future, that's how it's going to stay.

                        /me cries

DoubleCommand seemed so promising, but for now, it doesn't work in Tiger.

So... Tiger's broken some programs I could have used: Cabrio, DoubleCommand, and until recently, VLC. le Sigh... Even XP SP1 and SP2 betas didn't break apps for me...

Tiger has royally screwed up Macs in corporate networks too, due to network incompatibilities.

The reason Apple can churn out updates so quickly is they don't need to do much testing on them.

civ3 was a fun game. I'm playing the middle age scenario now. Well not right now, but I was playing it last night until 6:00 in the morning.
