  • Wall Phone Jacks?

We have two lines, one for the telephone and another for the internet. Well, the internet line isnt working now.

We can call in on the line but when we try to call out - or the modem tries to call out to the local provider - the dial tone continues except when pushing buttons. Normally the dial tone cuts off after we push the first button and we are allowed to make the call.

Is this indicative of a bad connection within the wiring in the wall jack panel? I took it off and there's a couple wires coming from the house connecting to 2 terminals where 2 more wires feed out and into the mechanism for the wire/jack to connect.

HELP! I'd hate to pay someone to replace the panel when it looks fairly easy to do myself.

    Okay, you are using dial-up?

Berz, if you can try to take a picture of the jack with the connections coming in and out.

Sorry, cant take a photo, but it is dial up.

2 wires feed in from the house. The terminals they attach too have 2 more short wires that feed into the jack where the cable plugs in. I suspect the problem is in the jack. But I dont know if the panel I can get at an electronucs store would have all the wiring except of course for the 2 main wires coming from the house.

Did you buy that wire insurance crap? If so they have to fix your jack for free.

I have bought the insurance twice and have had to use it both times that I bought it.

Firts question I have to ask is if you can use the other line your main phone line to plug up to internet. if it works in that jack then you have narrowed ur search to a probelm with the jack and or wire. the phone wire if it is dial up can mess up too. try to interchange the teo connects the phone with its wire to the jack for the internet and vise versa

                  fixing phone lines are easy.

and you can do them live too. Though I always heard if someone calls you when touching the wire, you'll get a nice little shock.

The hard part is getting access behind the wall. You can do it the easy way and just run a new phone under the carpet. .

Yup, we've narrowed it down to the one jack. Our internet access is via our main phone line right now until we fix this. We can call in on the line but cant call out, thats why the modem cant connect to our local server. I wouldn't hesitate replacing the jack myself but I'm told the original installation of the jack was much more complex because it had to be wired and it took hit and miss until the right wires went to the correct terminals.

Thx folks, we'll get this right soon

Be careful if you decide to replace it yourself. If you let the wrong wires touch it might blow out your connection.

There are four wires in a phone line and they are all colour coded, so you should be able to get it right the first time around. Just note which line goes to which connector.

Those are the standard colours, though I have seen some strange telephone lines before with colours such as silver and gold
