  • Famous Richards

    This is a place to post about well-known, or slightly well-known, Richards. A chance to refresh our memories - or maybe even expand our collective horizons a bit.

    Rules:

    * One Richard each
    * Let 3 other people post before you unleash another Richard
    * Try to post a little about your Richard, so as to identify him, and possibly add to the general knowledge of Richards
    * There are no more rules

            Richard, King of Almaine, Earl of Cornwall and Holy Roman Emperor:

            Richard, created Earl of Cornwall by his older brother Henry III, was the second son of King John and named after his uncle King Richard I, the Lionheart. In 1240 he led a crusade to the Holy Land and in 1257 he was elected King of the Germans (Almayne) in Aachen. He was thus emperor-elect of the Holy Roman Empire, the successor to Charlemagne, but the title had little real meaning since his rival Alfonso X of Castile had also been elected German King, and his election was never confirmed by the Pope.

                    The dastardly Richard Rich:

                    Richard Rich, 1st Baron Rich
                    born c. 1496, , London, England
                    died June 12, 1567, Rochford, Essex

                    A powerful minister to England's King Henry VIII and lord chancellor during most of the reign of King Edward VI. Although he participated in the major events of his time, Rich was more a civil servant than a politician; by shifting his allegiances he continually came out on the winning side in political and religious struggles.
                    In the Fred Zinneman film 'A Man For All Seasons', about Sir Thomas More, he was played by John Hurt.
