"village" isn't exactly appropriate. We're in the middle of nowhere (in city slicker terms anyways...30 miles to another city of comparable size to ours) and we're off a population high of about 16,000 so many years ago.
Anyway, last picture of this set for y'all. I'll try to find that better shot of downtown...

Barf @ boring cities in the middle of a desert, allowing citizens to con themselves into thinking they're environmentally friendly when, in fact, the cities look like that due to a lack of usable space.

If that's a potshot at me , that it makes you look really foolish considering the fact that I've posted a pic of my city ( gotta love that "green hill overlooking the blue sea" desert )
We have some disgusting suburbs ala N.america, too, and my family could've afforded a house, too, but the government usually regulates against them, and the people don't like them too much, since they make for an insane commute.
If you want to resurrect that thread, you can, but Wal Mart was not a major cause for cause for this disrepair, trust me, it was going to happen anyways.
Family run businesses close up as the owners get old...
Other major stores whose names aren't Wal Mart move out of downtown and into other shopping centers...
Population decline...
Neglect on the part of the owners of the property...
Some people pin the problem on our elected officials, but in and of itself the following kind of feeling does nothing to improve the city...just down the road from this picture, largely driven by the mayor we're building a river walk with pretty scenery, a new boat ramp, the works...
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

So, basically....you're beaten on all accounts.
Not at all.
Differing people like to live in different ways.
You prefer to have your government tell you how to live. We like telling out government "this is how we like living."
The difference is, we don't bother rationalizing our lack of authority over the most basic of life-decisions as something than it really is.
My government doesn't tell me how to live. It helps me live how I like to live. and yes, differing people like to live in different ways. However, I am not sure whether most americans have even been exposed to life in a functioning urban enviroment. I have been exposed to suburbia, and I don't like it.
Besides, you were also trying to imply that I try to glorify my current way of life due to lack of choice, which is, again, wrong.
