You are incredibly short sided and self-loathing I sense... sounds to me like you need a big hug *hug*.

Do you know how retarded this fallacy is?
Why don't you marry a football team then
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

How does this follow from the proposition that gays should have the right to marry each other.

It does from the statement that everybody loving each other should have the right to marry. What if I fall in love with two? Or with an umbrella, for that matter

An umbrella can't love you back (nor is it a consenting adult), and I, personally, believe polygamy should be legal.

You are being deliberately stupid because there are no actually decent arguments against gay marriage.

A little chill is in order... discuss the topic and not the posters or umbrellas...

That thread title could be a little more tasteful...
"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." -- JFK Inaugural, 1961

Drake - does that mean that LBJ
...that those pushing for the extension of rights to homosexuals should look at their own tactics when faced with electoral failure rather than blaming Christians or "stupid" conservative voters.
if you instead insert blacks that your statement would still apply? The internal logic would stay utterly consistant, and remember throughout the South there were miscegnation laws, you know, those ones about black marrying whites? "But that's different..." You know my opinion once that phrase is uttered. (You are the only one of the three posters to not support gay rights to post a valid point - that's why you are getting my attention. It's a dangerously valid point, IMHO).

However, Drake, you've hit upon a universal truth. Appeals to bigotry that are shared by a majority, or a substantial minority (with an uncaring center), is often a successful route to electoral success. The Republican Party played the race card in the South after LBJ finished forcing civil rights on the South (which is well documented in statements made by the Republican leadership of the time), which is how the party of Lincoln became identified with intolerant Southern whites. I watched our local Republican Party here deliberately target black districts with voter challengers (legal in Kentucky) in precincts they couldn't even be bothered to supply a poll worker for. This was in the 2004 election mind you.

So now the conservatives are finding a new bigotry to appeal to, play the gay card and fan the flames of intolerence with all kinds of bogus attacks, singling out a specific group for discrimination. I believe it was in 2000, when two or three gay Republican staffers were outed, that they were immediately fired. Are you trying to tell me that is NOT discrimination. You choose your bedfellows and I will choose mine. Be careful, though. If you have an accident and become crippled, you know, disabled, you might have need of those court decisions friendly to those who are disabled. If you become elderly, and suddenly have a fractured hip, you too might need some help from those - gasp - social programs.

Of course I don't even need to reply to the other ORD or the Datajack - my fellow posters, especially Imran have done a very nice job, thank you.

Every now and then, I'm tempted to want the law to ban marriage outright. Gays shouldn't be allowed to marry; and neither would straights.

Why? Well, seeing what a mess straight people have made of marriage, it'd be akin to taking away a child's toy.

If you can't share, and if you can't play with the toy nicely, there's no reason for you to have it at all.
