  • "I want to take...his face...off..."

In an emergency room at a Finnish hospital, a man sprawled unconscious on an operating table as surgeons labored to reattach the hand he had lost hours earlier while chopping wood. Medical miracles take many forms, but few are as vivid and immediate as this: As the tiny blood vessels were sutured back together, the patient's hand flushed from porcelain to pink. The delicate tendons of the palm revived, and the skin's granite glaze began to soften.

The medical challenges to face transplantation are formidable. As Dr. Siemionow envisions it, the series of operations will require rotating teams of specialists who may be deployed in more than one operating theater. The face to be transplanted will be removed, or "degloved," from a cadaver; it will most likely include the epidermis, along with the underlying fat, nerves and blood vessels, but no musculature.

Trying to tell us something Kaak?

I always wondered about this bit:

What are the psychological ramifications for the recipient's family, and the donor's, if the recipient actually comes to resemble the donor?

Although the article points out why this is unlikely, it would be unsettling to see dead uncle Bob strolling through the market.....

Did you not see that movie?! Anyway, I think there are a lot of ethical issues involved that need to be taken in to consideration..

What 'ethical issues' could be compared to the benefit of providing or restoring facial features to someone with extreme disfigurement?

He's referring to the movie "FACE OFF" Where a federal agent get's a face transplant from a supposedly dead terrorist in order to try to fool the terrorist's brother into telling him where the bomb he placed was located.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

Spence: while improving the quality of life for the patient, it will almost assuredly shorten their life. Also, from this it is just a small step to making someone look like the person whose face they are acquiring...Also, i'm signed up as a donor, but I don't want my face to be what's donated...call me selfish, but that's just freaky to me.

I havent seen the movie so its unreasonable to comment.

As to its shortening their life, I dont see why it would do so.

I was watching part of a show the other day about a special effects guy who makes prosthetic devices based on photos of the person. Its amazing how much more human someone looks with a nose and ears. The cops wife (he had been burnt in a car accident) broke down when she saw features she recognized on his face.

Certainly it might be strange for your family to know that a someone else had your face. The point is that they wont have your face. They wouldnt have the same bones, muscles, etc so would look much different.

30 years ago, most people found it strange to think that someone else would have your transplanted heart or kidneys. This is really no different.

I do support this for people with disfigured faces.

Though, even if you get someone else's face, they are still going to look different, because the other person has a different bone structure than the donor, at least I would assume.

Come on, let's face the facts here

You can't take this one at face value

On the face of it, this seems like a good idea. We might come face-to-face with some troubling aspects in the future, though. Hopefully the doctors pioneering this technique will face up to any such problems if they crop up, rather than covering them up in order to save face.
