  • Should polygamy be illegal?

I'll post this article, although I'm not sure if this article is the best example. I'm not sure if the article mentions it, but I believe this is the same guy who unofficially married a 13 year old girl. Yet authorities don't call it what it really is- paedophilia. They continue to call it polygamy in an attempt to slam the practice.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal is Nevada's most trusted source for local news, Las Vegas sports, business news, gaming news, entertainment news and more.

But assuming these are all consenting adult women, what's wrong with it? And it's not even true polygamy, because officially they are only married to one women. They just happen to live with the others.

As far as I'm concerned, it should be legal if all are "consenting adults"... I hold the same view for gay marriages. Consenting adults who love each other and want to get married should be allowed to.

So hot, young women shouldn't be allowed to marry elderly billionaires?

If they are of legal age, and want to get married, and aren't being forced into it... let them marry their sugar daddies

No. It should be illegal. It will leave too many men without wives and lead to a corresponding increase in violence.

That's why it tends to be illegal.

It should be legal in modern societies where women are fairly well empowered, and where divorce can be initiated without any significant hassle by any partner. So the US and Europe qualify.

But the laws must be made to make sure that there won't be one absolutely dominated partner: in most countries where polygamy is actually practiced, it tends to be a tool for male domination.

you know that the US and EU both have problems with sex slavery

sure, sections of are society have significant female empowerment, but others don't

also, marriage between two people should be supported by the government (I feel) (this is the reason I am in favor of homosexual marriage) (it shuold be supported because it is the most beneficial to be people involved)

Well, I guess that there are also some elderly billioneuses that wouldn't mind marrying three or four hot studs to sweeten their lifes

Polygamy doesn't nessecarily mean one male and several females.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

                  you wouldn't think that though.

if the women were smart they would team together and withhold sex. They should form a union.

(civil) marriage is a legal relationship, which establishes certain rights and responsibilities. That is why gay people want it - theyre NOT trying to undermine traditional marriage, pace certain folks, they want things like the right to determine whos at a loved ones bedside in a hospital - the status of next of kin - automatic inheritance rights - automatic responsibility for debt - rights to insurance same as Straights have.

Now lets say I hire somebody, and he turns out to have 15 spouses - do i have to provide insurance for all 15? Does it make sense for the state to establish 15 folks as his next of kin? If he wants to leave this relationship, does he have to have 15 seperate divorces? Or just one to which all 15 are parties? Does the marriage for the remaining 15 go on, or does it dissolve, like a partnership.

                    A legal nightmare I think.

not if we had universal health care. . employers should not be paying for insurance (or they should pay taxes to the goverment to pay for insurance)

I think it should be illegal due to all the past negatives that has come out of this practice. Not to mention the inbreeding that usually occurs with it. Hell if you want to have many partners what is the need or the desire to be "Married" anyway?

Thats one way to look at it. Since Divorce rates are hi now days. But on the other hand i seem to think common law marraige living together arrangements are far more common now days anyway.
