        Ahhhhh, yeah, completely forgot it

I thought he played Lafayette in a movie or so, because you posted about Lafayette then......btw there is a IMO very good tv movie/miniseries (IIRC four parts a 90 min.) about the French Rev with a lot of great actors (mostly Eurocoms though ), for example Sir Peter Ustinov. Lafayette is played by Sam Neill there.

And only until the 20th century. Scientists aren't sure until today, if severed heads are able to retain consciousness and to feel pain, until the brain dies from the lack of oxygen supply.

Wikipedia writes under the keyword "beheading":

"An even more gruesome issue is whether a decapitated head retains consciousness after separation from the body. The issue has been debated many times, especially in the context of whether beheading is or is not a humane form of execution. No definitive answer has ever emerged. Many have argued that loss of consciousness would be virtually instantaneous, either as a result of the massive drop in cerebral blood pressure, or because of the impact of the severing implement. Nevertheless, anecdotal evidence, of varying degrees of credibility, has circulated for centuries that severed heads may, under some circumstances, retain consciousness for at least a few seconds."

And later, in the chapter "Decapitation in the modern world":

"The use of decapitation has been discontinued in part because of suspicion that the severed head may in certain cases continue to be alive to some extent and capable of feeling pain. Some evidence for this was gathered by studying the presence of death-related chemicals in the brains of beheaded animals. There have also been many apocryphal stories from France about the severed heads of guillotined persons that would change facial expression or move their lips. Certainly another major reason for the end of the practice of beheading is the violent and messy nature of the practice."

actually, i like la marseillais a little more like this

                      Allons enfants de la patrie
Le jour de gloire est arrivé
                      Contre nous de la tyrannie
                      L'étendard sanglant est levé
                      L'étendaaaaard sanglant est levé
                      Entendez-vous dans nos campagnes
                      Rugir ces féroces soldats
Qui viennent jusque dans nos bras
                      Egorger nos fils, nos compagnes

                      Aux armes citoyens!
                      Formez vos bataillons!
                      Marchons, marchons
                      Qu'un sang impur

And just to remind you how nice our anthem is, here's a translation (from the internet. It's a good one, it has all the spirit of the original lyrics )

Arise you children of our Motherland !
Oh now is here our glorious day !
                          Over us the bloodstained banner,
Of tyranny holds sway ! (repeat)
Oh do you hear there in our fields
The roar of those fierce fighting men?
Who came right here into our midst
To slaughter sons, wifes and kin.

                          To arms, oh citizens!
                          Form up in serried ranks!
                          March on, march on!
                          And drench our fields
                          With their tainted blood!

I especially love the part where we drench our fields with the tainted blood of the enemy soldiers
The English version looks considerably reshuffled compared to the French version

To the best anthem..the only one able to raise the little hairs on my neck.

Hey, we even let you win a stage in the TdF.
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God? - Epicurus

Yes, but it keeps the spirit of the song. A non-reshuffled translation would probably look horribly mangled (the ordering of the words in the French version is quite confusing already )
