Animal control officers in Fairfax removed 187 cats from a house in Mount Vernon, and 59 cats and one dog from a home in Falls Church, officials said Monday.

In the Mount Vernon case, police went to a home on Ludgate Drive, Friday, to find 82-year-old Ruth Knueven living with 187 cats. Officers said the dead bodies of 86 more cats were left in trash bins outside Knueven's home."

'Cat Lady' Agrees Not to Have More Pets
FAIRFAX, Va. - The woman who allegedly kept almost 500 cats in two Fairfax County houses agreed Monday not to have any more pets.

Ruth Knueven, 82, agreed to sign a court order in District Court Monday that bans her from owning any animals.

Knueven spoke only once during the hearing, when she asked the judge to let her make a statement. Because criminal charges are pending, the judge advised her not to. She later declined to speak to reporters.

During raids this month on Knueven's Mount Vernon home and her daughter's town house in Burke, Fairfax County police found 488 cats — nearly half of them dead. The rest were so ill they had to be put to sleep.

Knueven will return to court in October.
