    • Honestly, I think the Olympics is more of a curse than a boon for most cities. London, Paris, New York, and Moscow need the Olympics like they need holes in their heads.

But congratulations to London, if only because they wanted it...
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

      • Also, as for Paris having had the Olympics only once, that's false. The 1900 Games were in Paris.

So the record will be Paris 2 London 3.

Paris will now be tied with Los Angeles.

            • There's something I find deliciously ironic. The vote was 54 to 50 in favour of London. The two Finnish voters voted for London.

              Wonderful

No, no, we developed a new form of government: extremely corrupted democracy.

                      • Spiff, that's interesting.. it might not mean anything, but then again it very well might be some kind of counter backlash from Chirac's comments. He's been the superstar of our tabloids ever since. Well.. but I hope in some way that it was n't because of that.. and that they placed their votes on who they think can give the best games for the rest of us. Who knows.. but certainly interesting.

hows that ironic? your president abused finland, and then the finnish voters voted against france, seems like a logical outcome tbh.

can't wait for the tabloid headlines tomorrow, i'm sure they'll be the model of magnamimous in victory...
