  • why am I using my pagefile?

According to the task manager, PF usage is a 470 MB, but I added the memory usage of all of the processes running and it came only to 340 MB - which should very easily fit in my RAM anyway.

If you have enough RAM, turn off you pagefile, windows really likes to use it even though it doesn't need to.

I turned it off, rebooted, and ctrl-alt-delete has PF usage at 510 MB now

Windows uses it to store traces of all porn images you browsed throughout years. Your parents can backtrace every w@nking session since purchase of the computer.

The size disappoints me though. My pagefile is 47 GB long.

And why is the pagefile larger than the sum of the memory usage from all of my processes?

You forgot that the operating system itself takes up room, and there are all kinds of drivers and stuff.

Windows XP et al. don't take up 2 gigabytes + half a gig of pagefile.

On top of that you have applications running.

Hell, there's very little period that takes up 2 gigabytes + half a gig of pagefile.

1 window, 1 tab. Besides the fact that I have the pagefile OFF.
