    Preemptive sadness?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

For good reason. I fully expect such ads to pollute my entertainment and fillibusters aplenty in the Senate.

They'll warn us that another conservative on the SCOTUS will mean the end of all our freedoms, the US will become an evil oppressive theocracy where everyone worships Bush.

            It'll be hilarious to watch.

I'm not uneasy about Bush not for this reason anyway. However, given the past record of the DNC and Moveon I'm prepared to see lots of ZOMFG Bush nominated one of teh evil conservatives to the SCOTUS! ads. And I believe the filibuster deal will collapse in the face of this "extraordinary circumstance."

                Edited for true meaning.

Of course, why it should be surprising that liberals would be concerned over potentially ultraconservative SCOTUS picks is beyond me. Was the religious right thrilled for Ginsburg or Breyer as nominees?

The extraordinary circumstances deal certainly is an interesting feature of this process.

She was a voice of moderation and reason on the Court. Losing her wisdom makes this a sad day for America.

If we end up getting another moderate out of this, I will be completely flabbergasted. Now we'll truly see if the spine transplant Dean has given the Dems is anything more than temporary and illusionary.

What if the Chief goes too? Would Bush be more likely to nominate a more moderate judge if he had two slots to fill?

She was 75... probably didn't want to die while listening to oral arguments. Would have been difficult for her to put off her retirement any further, especially if she wanted a few years away from all the hubbub before she passes on.

Oh, and Bush's approval rating means he probably won't try to nominate someone like his AG Gonzales. He's spent much of his political capital on Iraq anyway.

IIRC, her husband is really sick. I think she wants to spend her time with him in HIS last years, not hers.

I'd just be happy if we can get someone like Scalia or Rehnquist.

Have you seen her lately? She's not long for this world.

Depending on things, you may just have to settle for a Kennedy. At least it probably won't be a Souter .
