Originally posted by DerSchwarzfalke Baudolino is, imo, Eco's worst. If it is going to be your first Eco, put it down and go read The Name of the Rose or Foucault's Pendulum. Both are far superior.
I haven't read Baudolino yet. ( or maybe i picked it up and never finished it some years ago... i get the feeling that i have but i'm not sure ) The Name of the Rose and Foucault's Pendulum were great . The Island of the Day Before was... different. And Travels with a Salmon convinced me that i should stick to reading his works of fiction only.
Regardless, his style and wealth of knowledge make every read worth your while.
tnx...just came to that conclusion in the civ4 forum

I agree wholeheartedly on Eco's non-fiction essays. They were weak attempts at humor, for the most part, that may have been lost in translation.
Maybe I was not in the right frame of mind to enjoy Baudolino, but I did not enjoy it on either an intellectual level or on a lighter level. I just did not find it to be particularly good, especially when Foucault's Pendulum and The Name of the Rose were such achievements.
I look forward to reading his new book, The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana. It was just released in translation here in America.

I'm a sucker for that Amazon scam "others who bought this book also liked....", where you logon to buy one book on end ep with 3 or 4.
Last books I bought were after I'd seen a docu on Ghengis Khan, I went byu a book on him and ended up with that book, one giving biographies of Roman emperors, one on Attila the Hun and one on miltary campiagns of the Roman Empire.
reds4ever which book on military campaigns of the roman empire are you referring too?
