Baudolino is, imo, Eco's worst. If it is going to be your first Eco, put it down and go read The Name of the Rose or Foucault's Pendulum. Both are far superior.Visit The Frontier for all your geopolitical, historical, sci-fi, and fantasy forum gaming needs.

Naturally you're out of book space. Everyone is always out of book space. If you're not out of book space, you're probably not worth knowing

"The Elusive Quest for Growth" by William Easterly: The author tends to write a bit like a egomanical mad scientist, but he's making some interesting points.
"Globalization and its Discontent" by Jospeh Stiglitz: Much better writer and anyone who is interested in economics should read it. Accessible for the layperson.Golfing since 67

I've read first Name of the Rose, then Pendulum, and Baudolino was ... different. But not worst.Originally posted by Serb:Please, remind me, how exactly and when exactly, Russia bullied its neighbors?

I agree with Saras - only that I haven't read the pendulum yet (but note my recently purchased books on page 1 of this thread) and I enjoyed Baudolino very much - it's kind of light for an Eco, but the story is hillarious.

Combat Handgunnery by Massad Ayoob, strongly recommended (actually required) by my law enforcement friend before he teaches me proper handgun shooting. I'm getting a Concealed Carry permit. He does an excellent job of reviewing not just the proper use of a handgun, but many of the issues concerning deadly force use and etiquette (like don't reach up on your holster side when you are wearing a loose shirt to conceal the weapon, because now bystanders get to see both your kidney pads as well as the firearm)The worst form of insubordination is being right - Keith D., marine veteran. Very good read, The Templars book.
I am amazed at how much pseudo-history surrounding the Templars gets sold at mainstream bookstores. If you enjoy the book, give The Northern Crusades by Eric Christiansen a read. He's got the Midas touch.
But he touched it too much!
