It's not really surprising. These decades' attacks on sexism not only weakened the established social roles for women, it also weakened the established social roles for men as well. During the 90ies, there was the fashion of the "new fathers" among advertizing circles. Nowadays, it's the metrosexual fad.

The advertisers seem to be beginning to realise that there is no universal shift from an old model (the "retrosexuals") to one only new model (the metrosexuals). Things are actually much more open than that for men, who now have more freedom to pick & choose what they enjoy in each model, and who even have some freedom of creating a lifestyle by themselves.
