  • U2 crash

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A U.S. Air Force U-2 spy plane has crashed in southwest Asia, and the status of the pilot was not known, the military said Wednesday.

The cause of Tuesday night’s crash also was not known, U.S. Central Command in Baghdad said in a brief written statement.

One official said the location of the crash was not released because “host nation sensitivities” were involved.

The Central Command’s statement used the term “southwest Asia,” which can be used as a substitute for describing the Middle East.

“The specific location is not releasable due to host nation sensitivities,” U.S. Air Force Capt. David Small, a Central Command spokesman, said in an e-mail when asked for more information.
Hmm...Are we taking bets on the sensitive nation in question?

By my calculations, they're referring to Russia.

Apparently it crashed while attempting to land at the base in the UAE. Wonder why they couldn't have said that in the first place.....?

Because the UAE or whoever didn't want that information released. Collaboration with the infidel is frowned upon in some of those hellholes.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

The U2S is the current version, and they were last delivered in 1994.

Considering how many hours they've flown and how many people they're spied on successfully, a couple of malfunctions here and there don't even dent their record of success.

Yeah, 'cause it's only been a public fact for three years...

I understand the idea, just not the application in this case. Yes, I know, probably just somebody waiting for his higher-ups to say they can talk about it, but it just seemed odd to me.
