Well, i'll need a little more than that to dump the Corolla.

Personally I like the Mazda's interior and exterior better then the bland Civics plus the 3 comes iwth an optional 160hp 2.3L engine compared to the Civic's 116hp 1.6L. Both have 5 speed manuals or 4 speed autos but the Mazdaspeed version of the 3 comes with an optional 6 speed manual. The kicker is that the Mazda actually costs slightly less then the Civic.
I won't be going for the bigger engine anyway, but you are right about the price difference. It kinda surprised me actually.

I'd also recommend you at least test drive a Chevrolet Cobalt
Too recent. I'll give it another couple of years on the market before i consider it. And it being a GM (albeit a German designed one) works against it in my book.

    ... the VW Golf.
You're right: i have to consider that one. Guess i was looking the wrong way...
    What?

A friend of my friend's friend's friend told me yesterday that the Golf IV was to be avoided, because it's a car created in times when the company had saved money.... don't know if there is something to it...

The number one thing you should look for in a car is this: is it a babe magnet or not? Its all about sexual selection, man.

The Corolla is definitely not a babe magnet. It may be reliable, dependable, but it ain't fun, it ain't sexy. If the Corolla was a woman, would you date her? I don't think so.

So its either The Civic or the Mazda 3. Personally, I would get a Mazda 3 sport edition.

Or better yet, get yourself a muscle car from the fifties or the sixties

Your call. Maybe you like driving boring uninvolved cars which put the driver to sleep. I enjoy sportier cars which are fun t drive so I guess my tastes are different from yours.

Honda Civic = telling the world you're gay.

Toyota make good cars that are reliable and will work forever. My last car was a 1980 Corona XT (yes NS has this thing about old cars). Great car.

My choice, if I was in the market for a small car, would be either the Mazdaspeed 3 Sedan or the Chevrolet Cobalt SS with the 205 HP motor and the six speed manual. Either way my next car is going to be a Honda S2000 unless I have to get a four door for some reason and then I'd go for an Infinity G35 AWD.

Mazda 3 Sedan (I look a proper trunk over a hatchback)

                  Chevrolet Cobalt

                  S2000

Infinity G35 with AWD and a 298HP 3.5LV6, 6 speed manual, and just about everything else. Prices from $28k-$32K depending upon options.

Yes. That's the point. Potential thieves are not going to smash in your window if they think their grand haul will be some boiled sweets and a bottle of suppositories.

Want to bet? Thieves steal cars for parts not because the cars excite them. Basically they're looking for 5-10 year old cars which sold in large numbers since those are the ones which are going to need the most parts.

They wouldn't have touched my last car.

Put a couple of dead pigs in your car, seal the car tight. Then wait a month or so. Then remove the pigs. Voilà! Nobody in his right mind will try to steal your car.

Isn't the hatchback a lot more practical? When you fold the rear seats down flat, you've got enormous storage capacity.

This was pretty essentially for me, 'cause I'm out here by myself without knowing people with trucks, etc.

I've been able to fit entire desks and chairs easily in the back.

Why? I've been looking for those bad reviews for the 2004 / 2005 Elantra and i have seen more good ones than bad ones.

But then again, of course, i suck at the internet...
