Don't buy the Hyundai. Though it offers quite a lot for the money, it's not a great car to drive and won't hold value as well.

The other three you list are all strong performers. Normally I'd recommend the Civic on the grounds that Hondas hold their value better (though they all retain value well). However that might not be the case now as the Civic is closer to being replaced by a new model. The Civic has good internal space, but I'm not so ken on the looks.

My own preference out of the selection would be the Corolla, but there's not much in it.

I'd go for the Toyota as well. It's good value and built like a tank.

But just imagine how many books you'd be able to read during all those bus rides in just one year .

No. Men who are responsible do that.

          Responsible men can afford cars.

Just about anybody can afford a car.
Responsible men can manage well without cars.

But not all men have the guts and courage to go by bus

I went by bus when I was a kid and early college student.

                  No more!

I've had the guts (or the stupidity) to go on a bus in Cancun. There were literally people being thrown across the bus.

That's my initial feeling also but the recent reviews make me wonder, which is why i want to give it at least a test drive.
The resale value is the biggest snag with it. It isn't an issue with the other three, but it's at best a question mark with this one.

Hyundai (and their corporate siblings Kia) continue to be utter crap according to the quality surverys so I'd avoid them. Toyot'a Corolla is one of the most boring cars ever built so that's another dead end. So that just leaves the Civic or the Mazda 3.

Personally I like the Mazda's interior and exterior better then the bland Civics plus the 3 comes iwth an optional 160hp 2.3L engine compared to the Civic's 116hp 1.6L. Both have 5 speed manuals or 4 speed autos but the Mazdaspeed version of the 3 comes with an optional 6 speed manual. The kicker is that the Mazda actually costs slightly less then the Civic.

I'd also recommend you at least test drive a Chevrolet Cobalt which is actually a German designed Opel as well as the Ford Focus and the VW Golf. It will let you look at every car on the market and get a feel for the price differences between various manufacturers.

Not by other people, but by the forces of a bus darting in and out of traffic, slamming on the brakes and gunning it whenever it had the chance.
