You got it backwards. He left her. She didn't want to end the marriage. After all, Cruise had a girlfriend seemingly days afterwards (Penelope Cruz) and Kidman wasn't dating anyone for a long time.

If she was so Roman Catholic, she wouldn't have married a Scientologist in the first place. But the point was she was more Roman Catholic than Scientologist, particularly when it came to the raising of the adopted kids.

Kidman feigned shock at the divorce--helped get public sympathy. But the rumors were that she was interested in a split before he was (and that her desire for it affected his work on Vanilla Sky at the time). There are, of course, the rumors of her affair with Russell Crowe.
